A late-morning dedication ceremony — complete with a ribbon-cutting — was held for a trail in the Aspetuck River Valley area of southwestern Connecticut. Those taking part in the festivities for this new trail included Gina McCarthy, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (now part of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection) from 2004 to 2009.
“The trail we are dedicating today provides a new opportunity to families to enjoy our state parks and forests,” McCarthy said during the ceremony, “and I hope people from across the state put it to good use.” (McCarthy later served as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency between 2013 and 2017.)
The Aspetuck Valley Trail, which covers a total of 5.9 miles (9.5 kilometers), is used extensively for walking and hiking. Following snowfalls in the winter, this trail is used for cross-country skiing and also for walking with the help of snowshoes.
