In Mexico, an inaugural ceremony was held for Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport (also known as Tuxtla Gutiérrez International Airport) in the city and municipality of Chiapa de Corzo in the west-central region of the state of Chiapas. This international airport is 9.3 miles (15 kilometers) east of the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas.
Those taking part in the opening-day festivities for the airport included Vicente Fox, who became president of Mexico in 2000 and served in that role until November 2006; and Pablo Salazar Mendiguchía, who became governor of Chiapas in 2000 and served in that role until December 2006. The first commercial flight to land at this airport was a Boeing 737-201 plane of the Mexican airline Aviacsa traveling from the municipality and city of Tapachula in southeastern Chiapas, This same plane, by continuing its flight to Mexico City, also holds the record for the first take-off from Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport.
This airport, which replaced Francisco Sarabia National Airport in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, is operated by the government-owned corporation Grupo Aeroportuario de Chiapas. Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport reached its millionth-passenger milestone in 2015.
