In Tamil Nadu (India’s southernmost state), night landing facilities were officially established at Tuticorin Airport in the village of Vagaikulam within the district of Thoothukudi. These night landing facilities were first actually used five days later.
Vagaikulam is 9.7 miles (15.6 kilometers) west of the central section of the port city that is likewise known as Thoothukudi and was previously called Tuticorin. The domestic airport based in Vagaikulam serves not only the district of Thoothukudi and its namesake city but also the adjoining districts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanniyakumari.
Tuticorin Airport was inaugurated on April 30, 1992, by Jayaram Jayalalithaa, chief minister of Tamil Nadu. It is Tamil Nadu’s fifth busiest airport.
