1927: The Formal Debut of One of Portugal’s Tallest Lighthouses

February 20, 1927

Just a little over two months after first being placed into service on a trial basis, the Leça Lighthouse on northwestern Portugal’s Atlantic coast was officially inaugurated. This lighthouse was built in the then-civil parish of Leça da Palmeira (now part of the civil parish of Matosinhos e Leça da Palmeira) in the municipality of Matosinhos.

The engineer overseeing construction of the 151-foot (46-meter)-tall Leça Lighthouse was José Joaquim Peres. This conical tower replaced the Boa Nova Lighthouse, which was only about 39.4 feet (12 meters) in height and located approximately 984.3 feet (300 meters) to the northwest. The Leça Lighthouse ranks second only to the Lighthouse of Praia da Barra, measuring 203 feet (62 meters) in height and located at the mouth of the Aveiro lagoon in west-central Portugal, as the country’s tallest lighthouse.
