1910: The Start of Operations for Portugal’s Northernmost Lighthouse

March 20, 1910

The Montedor Lighthouse (Farol de Montedor) along Portugal’s Atlantic coast officially went into service. This 92-foot (28-meter)-tall granite tower, which stands on a promontory that is part of the municipality of Viana de Castelo, has the distinction of being the northernmost lighthouse in Portugal. The Montedor Lighthouse is seven nautical miles (13 kilometers) south of the mouth of the Minho River and four nautical miles (7.4 kilometers) north of the mouth of the Lima River.

This lighthouse was designed by engineer José Ribeiro de Almeida and has been automated since 1987. Over the decades, the Montedor Lighthouse has become both a significant landmark and major cultural symbol of Viana de Castelo.
