A two-tunnel tollway in Sydney, Australia’s most populous city and the capital of the state of New South Wales (NSW), was opened two months ahead of schedule. This structure, collectively called the Lane Cove Tunnel, serves as a link between the section of M2 Hills Motorway that is in the suburb of North Ryde in the North Sydney region; and the portion of Gore Hill Freeway based at the suburb of Artarmon on the North Shore of Sydney. Along with M2 Hills Motorway, the tunnel is part of the overall M2 route.
The Lane Cove Tunnel was officially opened by four construction workers representing the 9,000 people who helped build it over the course of three years. The public officials on hand for this Sunday ceremony included Eric Roozendaal, who was NSW’s minister for roads from 2006 to 2008.
The 2.2-mile (3.6-kilometer) Lane Cove Tunnel is owned and operated by Transurban Limited. This tunnel is part of the Sydney Orbital Network, a 68-mile (110-kilometer) ring road around and through the city. M2 Hills Motorway and Gore Hill Freeway are among the various other routes that likewise help constitute that network.
