A major tunnel that is located just south of the Belgian city of Antwerp and had been built under the Scheldt river first went into service when it was opened to motor vehicle traffic. Another milestone for this tunnel took place just a little over eight months later when it was opened to rail traffic as well. This multi-modal tunnel is 2,263.8 feet (690 meters) long. It was named after John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), the 35th president of the United States.
The Kennedy Tunnel actually consists of four parallel tunnels altogether. Two of the tunnels, each measuring 46.9 feet (14.3 meters) in width, carry motor vehicles. These tunnels run on either side of a 13.1-foot (four-meter)-wide tunnel for bicycles. The fourth tunnel is the one for rail traffic; it has a width of 34.5 feet (10.5 meters).
