1987: The Official Grand Opening of a Light Rail Line in Buenos Aires

August 27, 1987

A formal inauguration was held for a light rail line on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. This tram service was designated as the Premetro (Line E2), and the operations for portions of it had actually begun as far back as April 28 of that year.

The dignitaries attending the dedication ceremony for the Premetro included Pedro Trucco (born in 1949), who served as Argentina’s minister of public works and services in 1986-87; Facundo Suárez (born in 1954), who was intendente (mayor) of Buenos Aires from 1987 to 1989; and José María García Arecha (born in 1943), president of the state-owned public transportation company Subterráneos de Buenos Aires Sociedad del Estado (SBASE).

The Premetro is 4.6 miles (7.4 kilometers) in length. There are a total of 17 stations on this line. (One of these facilities is General Savio station, where the accompanying photo of a Premetro tram was taken in 2015.)
