2017: The Inauguration of a Major Bus Station in Quezon City

March 14, 2017

In the Republic of the Philippines, a bus station was inaugurated in Quezon City in Metro Manila (an area that is officially known as the National Capital Region) on the island of Luzon. This station is specifically located in Araneta City, an 86-acre (35-hectare) commercial mixed-use, transit-oriented development within Quezon City. The station — formally called the Araneta City Bus Port (ACBP) and styled on its logo and signs as “Araneta City Busport” — occupies a sizeable portion of Manhattan Heights, a residential condominium complex on General Romulo Avenue on the eastern side of Araneta City.

ACBP was built as an alternative to and ultimate replacement for the Araneta City Bus Terminal, which first went into service in 1993. Bianca Rose Dabu, writing for GMA News (renamed GMA Integrated News in 2020) of the Quezon City-based media company GMA Network, reported on the grand opening of ACBP.

Dabu wrote, “Located at the ground level of Manhattan Heights, the facility comes with top-of-the-line amenities like air-conditioned passenger lounge, a check-in baggage counter, and a centralized automated ticketing system.” She further stated, “Other upgraded features include commodious bus-loading berths, electronic widescreen bus schedules, and a public address system . . . The new busport is also equipped with CCTV systems and walk-thru detectors to ensure travelers’ safety and security. It is also strategically located across Ali Mall, where passengers can stop by for meals or do their last-minute shopping.”

Others on hand for the inauguration of ACBP on the day before it officially went into service included Maria Lenor “Leni” Robredo, who was the 14th vice president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022. “I’m very glad, finally, we have a world-class bus terminal,” she said. “We have gone a long way from where we started before. Everyone knows I prefer riding buses, and I know the difficulties that every passenger goes through when waiting.” Robredo also asserted, “This new busport will give a lot of comfort to everybody, and it will make the bus-riding public safer and more comfortable as they travel.”

ACBP has a total of 19 bus stands (bays). It has become a hub for several bus routes operating on Luzon. In addition, this station is connected to two rapid transit rail routes: the Light Rail Transit Line 2, which is owned and operated by the Light Rail Transit Authority; and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3, which is owned by the Metro Rail Transit Corporation and operated by the Philippine government’s Department of Transportation. Along with having these rail linkages, ACBP is located near other public transportation terminals in Araneta City. (The accompanying photo of the entrance to ACBP was taken in 2020.)
