Construction began on a regional rail station in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood. This station, which is located on Blue Hill Avenue at Woodhaven Street, was built as part of the Fairmount Line of the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) Commuter Rail system.
Blue Hill Avenue station was opened for regular service on February 25, 2019. The following month, a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony for the station took place. The public officials participating in this March 6 event included Charlie Baker, governor of Massachusetts; Karyn Polito, the Bay State’s lieutenant governor; Marty Walsh, mayor of Boston (and future U.S. secretary of labor); and Steve Poftak, MBTA general manager.
“The completion of Blue Hill Avenue Station will provide improved access to economic and educational opportunities for those that reside in communities along the entire Fairmount Line Corridor,” Baker said during his remarks to those in attendance.
The Fairmount Line, covering a total of 9.2 miles (14.8 kilometers), has nine stations altogether. (The accompanying photo of construction on Blue Hill Avenue station was taken in December 2017.)
