2019: A Major Expansion for Copenhagen Airport

June 4, 2019

The first part of a significant extension to Terminal 3 at Copenhagen Airport, which serves Demark’s capital city, was officially opened. This extension is called Pier E and its construction marked the largest expansion of the longtime airport in about a quarter-century. Pier E was designed to accommodate the ever-growing number of passengers at Copenhagen Airport.

Tara Craig, reporting for Passenger Terminal World magazine, highlighted key features of Pier E a little over a week after its public debut. She wrote, “The first stage of Pier E has eight gates, a new passport control, spacious and bright passenger areas and a new office building, which will house police officers, technical staff and equipment.”

As Craig likewise noted, another major component of Pier E is a massive work of art in this structure’s passport control area. This work, titled “Sfinks og natur” (Sphinx and Nature), is a multi-colored windowpane that was created by artist Alexander Toyborg. It holds the record as Denmark’s largest glass mosaic.

“The Sphinx is anchored in European culture and originated in ancient Assyria and Egypt,” Toyborg said while discussing his artwork at the time it was introduced along with Pier E. “That makes it a symbol that joins cultures together.”

Approximately 250 invited guests were on hand for the inauguration of the first segment of Pier E. The cutting of the ribbon for this new addition was performed by Crown Prince Frederik, who has been King Frederik X of Denmark since 2024.

Thomas Woldbye, chief executive officer of Copenhagen Airport, thanked the crown prince for his participation in that day’s festivities. Woldbye also used the occasion to underscore the potentially pivotal role of the new pier.

“With Pier E, we achieve a crucial milestone in the work of creating a sustainable airport of tomorrow for the benefit of Denmark,” asserted Woldbye. “Worldwide, in the coming decades, we are anticipating an increase in the number of passengers.”

Copenhagen Airport, which traces its origins to 1925, is one of Europe’s oldest international airports. In addition, it is the fourth busiest airport in northern Europe and the busiest one for international travel within all of Scandinavia.
