An automated people mover (APM) at Miami International Airport (MIA) was formally opened with considerable fanfare. This transit system, which is called the MIA Mover, was built to quickly transport people between the airport’s central terminal; and Miami Intermodal Center (MIC), a major hub for commuter rail, rapid transit, bus, and rental car services.
On the day of the MIA Mover’s opening, Alfonso Chardy of the Miami Herald reported on what this APM would replace. He noted in his article, “The automatic train, similar to those that connect terminals at major airports, will replace the buses that rental-car companies have used to transport passengers to the rental-car center.”
Those on hand for the debut of the MIA Mover included José Abreu, who was director of the Miami-Dade County Aviation Department between 2005 and 2014. (Abreu had served as secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation from 2003 to 2005.) Abreu joined Carlos A. Giménez, who had become mayor of Miami-Dade County just a couple of months earlier, in cutting a ceremonial ribbon for the MIA Mover. (Giménez, who served as mayor until 2020, is now the U.S. representative for Florida’s 28th congressional district.)
The MIA Mover covers 1.3 miles (two kilometers) between MIA and MIC. It is one of three APMs serving the airport. The other two are the MIA e Train, which provides a link between the satellite building of Concourse E and the remainder of that concourse; and the Skytrain, which connects a total of four stations within Concourse D.
