2004: Slovenia’s Longest Bridge is Opened to Traffic

September 24, 2004

In the westernmost region of Slovenia, a vehicular bridge crossing the Osp Valley and located near the village of Črni Kal was first opened to traffic. The Črni Kal Viaduct, which is part of the 152.4-mile (245.3-kilometer)-long A1 motorway (also called Slovenika), was jointly designed by Janez Kožel and Marjan Pipenbaher. Construction on this bridge began in 2001.

With a length of 3,494 feet (1,065 meters), the Črni Kal Viaduct is the longest bridge in Slovenia. The most distinguishing features of this structure include the 11 Y-shaped columns on which it is mounted. The tallest of these columns is 287 feet (87.5 meters) in height.
