The Wonhyo Bridge in South Korea’s Seoul metropolitan area was officially opened. This girder bridge spans the Han River and connects Yongsan District with Yeondeungpo District in that region of the country. The 4,822.8-foot (1,470-meter)-long structure was the 13th bridge to be built across the Han River. Construction on the Wonhyo Bridge began on July 17, 1978.
One of the Wonhyo Bridge’s biggest cultural claims to fame is its featured appearance in the 2006 horror film The Host, which was directed and co-written by Bon Joon Ho (born in 1969). The bridge also has the distinction of being listed in Seoul Future Heritage, a register of various entities formally designated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government as worthy of preservation.
