In the municipality of Tavros in Greece, operations began for a station built as a link in the rapid transit system serving the city of Athens and other parts of the country’s region of Attica. This station, which is on Line 1 of the Athens Metro, was named after both the municipality where it is located and a renowned statesman widely known as the Maker of Modern Greece. Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936) was a leader of the Greek national liberation movement; he served a total of eight terms as prime minister of Greece between 1910 and 1933.
Construction on Tavros-Eleftherios Venizelos station began in 1988. This station underwent major renovations in 2004 in preparation for numerous people traveling to and from the Summer Olympics held that year in Athens. The station is now one of 24 on Line 1. The Athens Metro in its entirety consists of 66 stations and – with a total of three lines – covers 57 miles (91.7 kilometers) altogether.
