2023: Celebrations Mark the Opening of a Light Rail Transit Service in Taiwan

February 10, 2023

In northern Taiwan, the Ankeng light rail transit line in New Taipei City’s Xindian District was formally opened. This event was marked by celebrations that involved everything from music to commemorative bottles of beer. Hou Yu-ih (born in 1957), who has been mayor of New Taipei City since 2018, was among those on hand for these festivities.

Railway Gazette International reported four days later, “The line runs 7·5 km [4.7 miles] southwest from Shisizhang to Shuangcheng [within Xindian District], with five elevated and four ground-level stations.” This article also noted, “A free service is being operated by New Taipei Metro Corp between 10.00 and 18.00 until March 12, with revenue services running between 06.00 and midnight set to begin on March 13.” (The attached photo of trams operating on the Ankeng light rail transit line was taken in January 2026.)
