2025: A Large Bee Helps Inaugurate a Light Rail Station in the Beehive State’s Community of Daybreak

March 26, 2025

In Utah’s Salt Lake County, a light rail station in the community of Daybreak was officially opened. Daybreak is part of the city of South Jordan. This city is one of many within the Wasatch Front, the name of the metropolitan region in the north-central section of the Beehive State.

South Jordan Downtown station is served by the Red Line of TRAX, a regional light rail system operated by the Utah Transit Authority. Construction on this station began during the summer of 2024. The station is the next-to-last one on the Red Line’s southwestern end, and it was built near a baseball stadium that would make its formal debut on April 8, 2025.

The Ballpark at America at America First Square is the home of the Salt Lake Bees, a minor league baseball team that plays in the Pacific Coast League and is the Triple A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team’s large black-and-yellow-striped mascot is Bumble, who showed up for the opening day festivities for South Jordan Downtown station.

The next day’s edition of the Salt Lake Tribune reported, as a matter of fact, that “Bumble the bee accompanied officials from the Utah Transit Authority on the inaugural trip to the new South Jordan Downtown station on UTA’s Red Line, located just a baseball-throw away from the Ballpark at America First Square.”

Carlton Christensen, chairman of UTA’s board, underscored the potential benefits of the station. He asserted, “The new South Jordan Downtown Station is ideally located to support transit needs for area residents, the surrounding urban center development and Bees fans throughout Utah with easy access from FrontRunner [a commuter railway operated by UTA] and bus routes all along the TRAX Red Line.” Christensen further stated, “Adding a new TRAX stop on the popular Red Line will encourage public transit ridership across the Wasatch Front, thereby improving residents’ quality of life by reducing day-to-day expenses, traffic congestion and tailpipe emissions.”

Dawn R. Ramsey, mayor of South Jordan, likewise highlighted the significance of South Jordan Downtown station. “Today is a historic milestone for South Jordan and a testament to what can be accomplished when vision, persistence and strong partnerships come together,” she noted. “The station connects our community to the Greater Salt Lake Valley and beyond, making it easier for our residents to commute, and for visitors from across the Wasatch Front to explore and enjoy everything South Jordan has to offer.”

This station is the newest of three Red Line stations to be opened in South Jordan. The other two are South Jordan Parkway and Daybreak Parkway stations. (The accompanying photo of South Jordan Down station was taken a little over a week before its official opening.)
