Victoria Sheehan, who has served as commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation since October 2015, was elected president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in October 2020. Sheehan is the second woman to serve as president of AASHTO in its 107-year history.
AASHTO’s first female president was Susan Martinovich, who served as director of the Nevada Department of Transportation from November 2006 to September 2012. Martinovich was AASHTO president from October 2010 to November 2011. The first woman to become head of a state department of transportation was Adriana Gianturco. She was appointed director of the California Department of Transportation in March 1976 and served in that position until January 1983.
