August 9, 1978
On Singapore’s southeastern coast, a lighthouse in the planning area and matured residential town of Bedok formally began operations. The inauguration of Bedok Lighthouse took place on National Day of Singapore. This holiday is held each year on August 9 to commemorate Singapore’s independence from Malaysia in 1965.
Bedok Lighthouse also had the distinction being Singapore’s first automated, unstaffed lighthouse. Another unique aspect of Bedok Lighthouse was underscored by author and Singapore resident Priscilla Tan in a 2021 article that she wrote about several lighthouses in that Southeast Asian island country and city-state.
“Think lighthouses and you’d probably picture tall towers perched proudly in the middle of the ocean,” noted Tan. “But that’s not the case for Bedok Lighthouse, the only one in Singapore located at the most unassuming place: atop a condominium.” As a result of its perch on the roof of a 26-story condominium tower, Bedok Lighthouse is 249 feet (76 meters) above sea level.
