1987: Singapore Gets a New Bus Terminal

June 20, 1987

In the Downtown Core of Singapore’s Central Area, a dedication ceremony was held for a bus terminal along Shenton Way. (Shenton Way is major trunk road serving that region of Singapore.)  This original version of Shenton Way Bus Terminal was located under the elevated section of the East Coast Parkway.

The first iteration of Shenton Way Bus Terminal was designed and constructed by Singapore’s Public Works Department (PWD). During that Saturday ceremony in 1987, the operations of this new facility were formally transferred to the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI).

Ho Kah Leong, MCI’s senior parliamentary secretary, presided at the ceremony. He used the occasion to commend PWD for its work on Singapore’s newest public transit infrastructure. “Praise for Shenton Way Bus Terminal Project,” stated the headline for the Straits Times’ article on the ceremony.

This bus terminal, as a result of plans for another major construction project in that part of Singapore, was relocated to nearby Palmer Road on April 26, 2010. The terminal remained there until June 25, 2017, when it was relocated to Shenton Way. (The above photo of the current version of Shenton Way Bus Terminal was taken in 2022.)

The bus operators serving this terminal are SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, and Tower Transit Singapore. The amenities at the present-day incarnation of Shenton Way Bus Terminal include a total of 150 parking spaces for bicycles.
