1997: The Introduction of a Metro Station for One of Spain’s Busiest Rapid Transit Systems

July 5, 1997

In northern Spain, Basarrate station in the neighborhood of Santutxu in the city of Bilbao was opened. This station serves both lines 1 and 2 of the Bilbao metro, the rapid transit system for both that city and the surrounding metropolitan area. Basarrate station is located near a stop for two bus lines of the public transportation service Bilbobus.

Basarrate station was among the Bilbao metro stations designed by British architect Norman Foster (born in 1935). As with many of those other stations, Basarrate station features a cavern-shaped layout.

The Bilbao metro, which began operations in 1995, consists of three lines altogether. These lines collectively encompass a total of 48 stations and 31.7 miles (51 kilometers). The Bilbao metro ranks third behind its counterparts in the regions of Madrid and Barcelona as Spain’s busiest rapid transit system.
