2004: The Formal Unveiling of a Train Station at One of Germany’s Major Airports

June 12, 2004

In the western region of the Federal Republic of Germany, a train station at Cologne Bonn Airport made its formal debut. Cologne/Bonn Airport station was officially opened by Gerard Schröder, who served as chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005. Construction on this four-track underground station had started on January 29, 2002.

Cologne/Bonn Airport station was designed by architect Helmut Jahn. One of the key features of this facility is its glass dome, which measures 512 feet (156 meters) in length and 118 feet (39 meters) in width. There are only about 100 steps between the station and the airport’s check-in counters.

This station was built as part of the Cologne-Frankfurt high-speed rail line, a 110-mile (180-kilometer) route connecting the cities of Cologne and Frankfurt. Cologne/Bonn Airport station is specifically linked to that line by a 9.3-mile (15-kilometer) loop.

Cologne Bonn Airport is Germany’s seventh largest passenger airport. In addition, it ranks third as the country’s third largest airport with respect to cargo operations.
