A public transit system in the city of Sidi Bel Abbès in northwestern Algeria was inaugurated by Abdelghani Zaalane, the country’s minister of transport and public works. Construction on the Sidi Bel Abbès Tramway had begun on June 22, 2013.
Another milestone for this project took place on April 8, 2016, when the first of the Alstom Citadis 402 type trams for the system was delivered to Sidi Bel Abbès. Henri Bussery, Alstom’s president in Algeria, was among those attending the official launch of the Sidi Bel Abbès Tramway about15-and-a-half months later. Bussery noted at the time, “With Sidi Bel Abbès, we are pursuing our partnership with Algeria to provide its inhabitants with the most environmentally friendly, comfortable transport system in existence: the tram.”
The Sidi Bel Abbès Tramway covers 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) altogether. There are a total of 22 stations serving this system.
