1989: A Truly Savage Commuter Rail Station in Maryland First Goes into Service

July 31, 1989

Savage station, which is based in central Maryland, first went into regular service early on a Monday morning. This station is part of the Camden Line of the MARC commuter rail system and it is specifically located between the communities of Savage in Howard County and Annapolis Junction in both Howard and Anne Arundel Counties. The infrastructure at Savage station includes two platforms and a parking lot.

In promoting the debut of this addition to its Camden Line, MARC ran an advertisement in the Baltimore Sun that capitalized on the station’s name. “MARC Goes Savage to Beat Unruly Traffic,” proclaimed the headline for this public notice.

The advertisement also stated, “If traffic turns you into a beast, then catch a MARC train from our new Savage, Maryland station. Leave rush hour traffic behind, and come with us for a ride that will tame your anxiety.” (The community of Savage actually owes its relatively unique name to John Savage II [1790-1831], a merchant who helped establish a textile firm in the area in 1822: the Savage Manufacturing Company’s products included sails for clipper ships traveling to and from Baltimore Harbor.)

Savage station was formally dedicated on the Friday before the start of regular train runs there. Among the inaugural festivities that day were various train tunes played by a disc jockey. The public officials who took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new station included Elizabeth Bobo (born 1943), Howard County’s executive from 1986 to 1990. Bobo painted a rosy picture of Savage station’s future during her remarks to those in attendance. “We expect to have it used very heavily,” she said. “We expect parking spaces to be filled soon.”

The Camden Line in its entirety covers a total of 39 miles (63 kilometers) between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. There are 12 stations serving this route.
