2021: The Extension of a Rapid Transit System in the Geographical Heart of India

August 21, 2021

Regular operations began for a one-mile (1.6-kilometer) extension of the rapid transit system serving the city of Nagpur in India’s state of Maharashtra. Uddhay Thackeray, who was chief minister of Maharashtra from 2019 to 2022, handled these inaugural duties.

One of the key features of this new segment of Nagpur Metro’s Orange Line was the Zero Mile Freedom Park station. Along with being a metro station, this 20-story building contains various hotels, offices, restaurants, multi-level parking, and a banquet hall.  The station owes its name to the nearby Zero Mile Stone, which dates back to 1907 and marks the geographical center-point of India.

Measuring 13.9 miles (22.3 kilometers) in length, the Orange Line currently consists of 18 stations altogether. The attached photo of a train operating on this line was taken in 2022.
