A newly completed train station in the San Francisco Bay Area’s city of Fairfield was opened. This station provides access for residents of both Fairfield and the neighboring city of Vacaville to Amtrak California’s Capitol Corridor rail line. The facility — originally called Fairfield-Vacaville station — is also a transfer hub for Fairfield Transit (FAST), a public bus service comprising a total of eight routes in the region.
Construction on the station had begun on May 20, 2015. Nearly four years after this groundbreaking ceremony, the facility was formally renamed Fairfield-Vacaville Hannigan Station in memory of a longtime public official in that part of the Golden State. Thomas M. Hannigan (1940-2018) served on the Fairfield City Council between 1972 and 1974 and as the city’s mayor from 1974 to 1978. He went on to represent the area as a member of the California State Assembly from 1978 to 1996. Throughout the years, Hannigan firmly established himself as a strong advocate for developing the Capitol Corridor in Northern California.
The Capitol Corridor covers a total of 168 miles (270 kilometers) between the cities of San Jose in the Bay Area and Auburn in the Sacramento Valley. This Amtrak-run passenger rail route first went into service on December 12, 1991.
