2022: The Opening of a Light Rail Station in San Francisco’s South of Market Neighborhood

November 19, 2022

Yerba Buena/Moscone station in San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood was officially opened. This underground light rail station, which is a link in the T Third Street line of the San Francisco Municipal Railway’s Muni Metro system, owes its name to both Yerba Buena/Moscone Gardens and Moscone Convention Center in that section of the city. Yerba Buena/Moscone station – specifically located at 4th and Folsom Streets –was one of the stations built as an extension of the T Third Street line between San Francisco’s Chinatown neighborhood and SoMa.  (This construction effort was known as the Central Subway project and had begun in 2012.)

Along with being served by T Third Street line trains, Yerba Buena/Moscone station is a stop for a total of six Muni bus routes. The distinguishing features of this station include several works of art displayed there. These works include Roxy Paine’s branch-shaped sculpture Node, which measures 110 feet (34 meters) in height and can be found in the plaza; and – on etched granite panels on the mezzanine and platform walls — an untitled collection of photos taken by Catherine Wagner during the construction of the Moscone Convention Center during the 1970s.

The T Third Street line is served by 22 stations altogether. Muni Metro, which is the sixth busiest light rail system in the United States, encompasses a grand total of seven lines and 117 stations. (The attached photo of Yerba Buena/Moscone station was taken on its opening day.)
