1998: A Brazilian Train Station First Goes into Service

January 10, 1998

Operations began for a train station in the municipality of Ferraz de Vasconelos in southeastern Brazil’s state of São Paulo. This station is part of Line 11 (Coral) of the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) , which is known in English as the São Paulo State Metropolitan Trains Company.

The CPTM facility in Ferraz de Vasconelos was originally called Lageado station. A little over seven months after first going into service, however, this station was renamed in honor of Antonio Gianetti. A longtime resident Ferraz de Vasconelos, Gianetti achieved renown as a businessman who made notable quality-of-life contributions to communities in that region of São Paulo. His nephew Guilherme Gianetti, a state deputy (member) of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo, was instrumental in the name change for the station.

CPTM’s Line 11 (Coral) has a total length of 31.4 miles (50.5 kilometers) and encompasses 16 stations altogether. CPTM in its entirety covers 196 miles (315 kilometers) altogether and has a total of 57 stations.
