2023: The Debut of a Mass Rapid Transit Station in Bangladesh’s Capital City

February 18, 2023

Operations began for a station in the Uttara neighborhood of Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. This elevated station — formally designated as Uttara Center — is part of Line 6 of the city’s mass rapid transit system known as the Dhaka Metro.

The first section of that line was the very first link of the Dhaka Metro to be opened. This segment of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 6 was officially inaugurated with the waving of a green flag by Sheikh Hasina (born in 1947), who served as prime minister of Bangladesh between 1996 and 2001 and again from 2009 to 2024.

This ceremony took place a little less than two months before Uttara Center made its own debut with a conspicuous lack of fanfare. “There wasn’t much of a crowd after the station opened on Saturday morning,” reported the Dhaka-based news portal bdnews24.com, “but some people did come to see the metro train.”

MRT Line 6 now covers 13.2 miles (21.3 kilometers) altogether and serves a total of 16 stations. At this time, the line is the only part of the Dhaka Metro that is actually up and running. (The accompanying photo of the inside of Uttara Center was taken about seven months after this facility was opened.)
