2022: The Rollout of a Streetcar Line in the Grand Canyon State

May 20, 2022

A streetcar line in central Arizona’s city of Tempe was opened for regular operations. This transit system is operated by the Valley Metro regional Public Transportation Authority (better known as Valley Metro), which serves that area of the Grand Canyon State. Construction on the Valley Metro Streetcar — also called the Tempe Streetcar — had begun on June 1, 2017.

Corey Woods, mayor of Tempe, highlighted the significant role for this streetcar service at the time of its opening. He said, “With Tempe having the highest transit ridership per capita in the state, as well as the highest density, a multi-modal transportation network is essential.” Woods also asserted, “We are building for our future and the streetcar is a great example of that.”

Jessica Mefford-Miller, the chief executive officer of Valley Metro, likewise underscored the potential benefits of the Tempe Streetcar. She said that this service would add “another sustainable option for transit riders to move around the Valley and enhances our comprehensive, regional transit network.”

The Tempe Streetcar covers a total of three miles (4.8 kilometers) within Arizona’s ninth largest city by population. There are 14 stations altogether on this streetcar’s route.
