2024: The Start of Regular Service for an Aesthetic Extension of the Naples Metro

July 17, 2024

In southern Italy, operations officially began for a new segment of the rapid transit system serving the city of Naples. The start of regular service for this extension of Line 6 of the Naples Metro took place the day after Gaetano Manfredi, who has been mayor of the city since 2021, joined several other dignitaries for what Railway Gazette International characterized as “an inaugural journey taking in the ornate architecture of the stations.”

The new stations for Line 6 at the time were the following:

  • Arco Mirelli station, designed by architect Hans Kollhoff and featuring a glass-and-steel pavilion at its entrance;
  • San Pasquale station, designed by architect Boris Podrecca and including a sea-themed optical installation that was created by artist Peter Kogler; and
  • Chiaia Monte di Dio station, designed by architect Umberto Siola and containing both a multi-level walkway and artist, screenwriter, and film director Peter Greenaway’s renditions of various ancient Roman gods. (The accompanying photo of this station was taken on July 19, 2024.)

This extension of Line 6 covers about two miles (3.1 kilometers) between Mergellina and Municipio Porto stations. (The latter of these stations was opened in 2015 and now serves both Lines 1 and 6 of the Naples Metro.) Line 6 has eight stations altogether and a total length of 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers).
