Operations began for Pedro Mir station on Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro, a rapid transit system in the metropolitan region of the Dominican Republic’s capital city. The station was one of 13 opened as part of the inaugural segment of that line.
Pedro Mir station was built underneath Avenida John F. Kennedy, a major thoroughfare coursing through the northern area of downtown Santo Domingo. This station was named in honor of one of the Dominican Republic’s most renowned poets. Pedro Mir (1913-2000) was formally named the country’s poet laureate by the Congress of the Dominican Republic in 1984. Mir’s widely acclaimed poems include his 1952 work Contracanto a Walt Whitman (Countersong to Walt Whitman).
Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro now covers 10.3 miles (16.5 kilometers) altogether, while Line 1 – which made its debut in 2009 – encompasses a total of nine miles (14.5 kilometers).
