In the state of Assam in northeastern India, a newly installed aerial tramway system in the greater Guwahati region was formally inaugurated. Guwahati Ropeway crosses the Brahmaputra River and serves as a link between the neighborhood and commercial center of Panbazar in the city of Guwahati on the river’s southern bank; and the village of Rajadwar in the town of North Guwahati on the northern bank. The specific endpoints for this twin-track airborne means of transit are the Kachari Ghat Terminal in Panbazar and the Rajadwar Terminal.
“The Assam government on [August 24] inaugurated a 1.8-km [1.1-mile]-long ropeway over the Brahmaputra, connecting Guwahati to North Guwahati,” reported Abhishek Saha in his Indian Express article about the tramway’s debut. “Officials have said that it is the longest ropeway on a river in India.” He also noted, “It takes eight minutes to traverse the entire length of the ropeway.”
Along with being a faster alternative to ferry services that routinely operate between both banks of the Brahmaputra River, Guwahati Ropeway provides unmatched bird’s-eye views of the region for tourists and area residents alike. Each of Guwahati Ropeway’s cabins (cable cars) can accommodate as many as 30 passengers at one time.
