National Hispanic Heritage Month: Michael Lira, Stock Car Racing Driver

Professional stock car racing driver Michael Lira, who is of Peruvian descent, was born to Carlos and Amanda Lira on July 16, 1997. Fittingly enough, Michael’s birthplace was Daytona Beach, Florida, a city that is famous worldwide as both a venue for major motorsports events and the headquarters of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).

To a notable extent, Michael has followed in his father’s footsteps when it comes to pursuing a motorsports career. Carlos Lira, who started out life in Peru’s capital city of Lima, began competing as a sports car racer at the age of 18.

Michael Lira developed his own strong interest in motorsports racing as a child, He was only nine when he began karting, an open-wheel motorsport that involves racing in lightweight, open-wheel vehicles known as go-karts. Within the next several years, Michael was competing in pickup truck racing. (Race pickup trucks are mechanically identical in many ways to quite a few stock cars.)

In 2012, Michael won the regular weekly season track championship for the racing competition called the Florida United Pro-Truck Series and held at New Smyrna Speedway. He tied for the Pro-Truck Track championship race at Orlando Speed World that same year. Michael has since participated in such high-profile stock car races as the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series; the ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America) Menards Series; and the ARCA Menards Series East.
