1982: The Opening of a Light Rail Rapid Transit Station in Northeastern England

November 14, 1982

Manors Metro station in northeastern England’s ceremonial county of Tyne and Wear was officially opened. This station, which is located in the Shieldfield area of the city and metropolitan borough of Newcastle upon Tyne, is part of the region’s Tyne and Wear Metro light rail rapid transit system. Measuring a total of 48.2 miles (77.5 kilometers) in length, this public transportation network encompasses two lines and 60 stations altogether. (One of those lines has been designated as the Green Line, with its counterpart formally called the Yellow Line; Manors Metro station serves the latter line.)

The services for passengers that are available at Manors Metro station include ticket machines; next-train information displays; and smartcard validators. While there is no dedicated parking at the station for motor vehicles, there are nearby parking lots operated by Newcastle City Council. Manors Metro station does have cycle pods in place for bicyclists. Another feature at Manors Metro station is an abstract mural entitled Magic City, which was commissioned in 1987 and created by British artist Basil Beattie (born in 1935). This artwork is on display on the station’s concourse.
