2006: The Introduction of a Light Rail Transit Station in Canada’s Festival City

January 3, 2006

A light rail transit station in Edmonton, the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta, was officially opened. This station, which is part of the light rail system serving Edmonton (nicknamed “Festival City” for the various festivals that it hosts each year), is located at 114th Street at 83rd Avenue on the main campus of the University of Alberta. The station owes its name to two nearby major facilities: the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, one of the largest hospitals in western Canada; and the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, a four-million-cubic-foot (110,000-cubic-meter) center for culture, community, and performing arts activities.

Health Sciences/Jubilee station was the first ground-level station of Edmonton Light Rail Transit (widely known in that region as the LRT) to be opened since the debut of Clareview station near 42nd Street and 139th Avenue in the city in 1981. Health Sciences/Jubilee station serves both the Capital Line and the Metro Line of the LRT. The station is the southern terminus of the latter of those lines.

One of the key architectural features of Health Sciences/Jubilee station is a footway network that links the station with the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, and Kaye Edmonton Clinic. The station also contains “I Witness,” large-scale artwork created by Holly Newman. This artwork consists of text etched into the glass walls in the waiting area and footprint impressions embedded in the concrete platform.

About 100 people turned out for the Tuesday morning inauguration of Health Sciences/Jubilee station in 2006. The dignitaries on hand for this ceremony included Stephen Mandel, who served as mayor of Edmonton from 2004 to 2013.
