2012: The Debut of the Lisbon Metro Station Serving Portugal’s Largest Airport and Main International Gateway

July 17, 2012

A terminal station that had been built to serve Humberto Delgado Airport (Aeroporto Humberto Delgado) and is located on the Red Line of the Lisbon Metro – the rapid transit station operating in the metropolitan area centered on Portugal’s capital city – was officially opened. Humberto Delgado Airport, which is informally known as Lisbon Airport, is the main European hub to Brazil and also a pivotal European hub to Africa. In addition, this airport is the 12th largest one in Europe when it comes to passenger volume.

Aeroporto station was designed by architect Leopoldo de Almeida Rosa. This facility was inaugurated on the same date as the Encarnacão and Moscavide stations, which are both likewise part of the Red Line. The Red Line contains a total of 12 stations and covers 6.2 miles (10 kilometers). It is one of four lines serving the Lisbon Metro.
