2008: The Illuminating Debut of Singapore’s Longest Cable-Stayed Bridge

January 3, 2008

A bridge crossing Keppel Bay in the southernmost section of the Central Region of Singapore made its public debut. This bridge carries both motor vehicles and pedestrians between Keppel Island and the mainland. It also carries lines for water, electricity, and other essential services to Keppel Island. Measuring 820 feet (250 meters) in length, the structure holds the record as Singapore’s longest cable-stayed bridge.

The Keppel Bay Bridge was officially opened by S.R. Nathan (1924-2016), who served as the sixth president of Singapore from 1999 to 2011. In its press release issued that same day, the Singaporean property and infrastructure company Keppel Corporation (now known as Keppel Ltd.) stated that this dedication for the bridge included “a grand light-up ceremony involving pyrotechnics across its [span], witnessed by more than 300 guests gathered at the waterfront promenade at Keppel Bay show gallery.”
