2013: The Start of Regular Service for the Milan Metro’s First Driverless Line

February 10, 2013

Regular service began at 11:00 a.m. for the first fully automated line of the rapid transit system Metropolitana di Milano (Milan Metro) in Italy’s second most populous city. Line 5 — also known as M5 or the Lilac Line — had been formally inaugurated five days earlier. Those on hand for that ceremony included Giuliano Pisapia (born in 1949), who served as mayor of Milan from 2011 to 2016.

The initial 2.6-mile (4.1-kilometer) segment of Line 5 encompassed seven stations altogether. One of these facilities is the Bicocca station. The accompanying photo of numerous passengers and a train at this station was taken on the line’s first day of operations.

The trains now being used for this underground line are Hitachi Rail Italy Driverless Metro electric multiple units. Line 5 currently covers eight miles (12.9 kilometers) altogether and serves a total of 19 stations.
