2017: The Formal Introduction of a Pedestrian Bridge in Malaysia

A pedestrian bridge in Kuching, the capital and most populous city of Malaysia’s state of Sarawak, was formally dedicated. This 905.5-foot (276-meter)-long structure crosses the mouth of Sarawak River and has the distinction of being the only pedestrian bridge connecting the northern and southern sections of Kuching.

Abdul Taib bin Mahmud (1936-2024), who served as the governor (Yang di-Pertua Negeri) of Sarawak from 2014 until his death, officiated at the opening of the bridge. He named the structure “Darul Hana,” an Arabic term that means “place of peace and tranquility.” In addition, Taib took time during the dedication to describe Darul Hana Bridge as “the symbol of Sarawak and a “heritage trail to those who come here.”
