Work on a new railway station in the South Korean city of Pohang was completed. This station replaced one that had been in service since 1914. Pohang, which is the largest city in North Gyeongsang Province in the eastern region of the county, was designated a town in 1931 and a city in 1949.
Operations at the current version of Pohang station began on April 2, 2015. At the time, the high-speed Korea Train eXpress (KTX) trains that would serve the route between this four-platform station and the country’s capital city were emphasized in the press.
“This new KTX [service] will transport passengers between Seoul and Pohang in roughly two hours and 30 minutes, cutting the travel time by more than three hours,” reported Sohn Ji-young for the Korea Herald. “Previously, it took passengers riding on the Saemaeul [trains] five hours and 20 minutes to travel the same distance.”
Originally the northern terminus of the Donghae Nambu Line, the new Pohang station became a major part of the Donghae Line on December 30, 2016. The Donghae Line is managed by the government-owned corporation now known as Korea National Railway. This line covers 193.1 miles (310.7 kilometers) altogether and encompasses a total of 61 stations.
