In southwestern Switzerland, a newly built pedestrian suspension bridge near the municipality of Randa first went into service. This bridge was named after Charles Kuonen, a psychologist and one of the owners of a Swiss winery. As the primary private sponsor of the construction project for the bridge, he made a significant financial contribution to the infrastructure now bearing his name.
Approximately 250 to 300 people – including both tourists and area residents – attended the formal inauguration of the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge. This bridge, which is suspended above the Grabengufer ravine in the Mattertal Valley, was built by the company Swissrope in about two-and-a-half months. Measuring 1,621 feet (494 meters) in length, the bridge was the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge as the time of its public debut.
