In the western section of London, a newly completed pedestrian bridge in the city’s district of Chiswick was officially opened. Chiswick Park Footbridge is located just north of Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve. This 114.8 (35-meter)-long bridge serves as a connection between Chiswick Business Park, a development that encompasses the London-area offices of several multinational companies and various other organizations; and Chiswick Park tube station, part of the region’s London Underground rapid transit system.
Chiswick Footbridge was jointly designed by the London-based architectural firms Expedition Engineering and Useful Studios. Just a little over a month before this footbridge made its debut, Useful Studios founder Catherine Ramsden discussed the structure’s innovative design in an interview with the Chiswick Herald.
“It’s a beautiful marriage of engineering and architecture,” Ramsden said during that interview. “It’s very slender, and we’re proud of the fact that we have made it more sustainable by minimizing the amount of material involved. So it has very slender arches and deck.” Ramsden further noted, “The balance of stability, performance and aesthetics has led to a very pared-back and elegant solution.”
On November 20, 2019, Chiswick Bridge was one of the recipients of that year’s AJ Architecture Awards. These awards are presented to commemorate the technical and aesthetic merits of a wide range of structures throughout the United Kingdom, and Chiswick Park Footbridge won in the category of best infrastructure project. Judges for this category in 2019 described Chiswick Park Footbridge as a “joy to walk over” and a “really nice experience,” according to the Architects’ Journal.
