2010: A Dedication Ceremony for a Road in Indonesia

January 26, 2010

In the Republic of Indonesia, the Kanci-Pejagan Toll Road on the island of Java was officially opened. Those participating in the dedication ceremony for the new road included Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (born in 1949), who was president of Indonesia from 2004 to 2014.

This 22-mile (36-kilometer)-long toll road, which is located in the northern section of the island, connects Kanci (a town near the port city of Cirebon) in the province of West Java with the community of Pejagan in the province of Central Java. That road was built as part of the Trans-Java Toll Road (TJTR). The Indonesian government began developing the TJTR in the mid-1990s to help expand the national highway network on what is the world’s most populous island. The still-unfinished TJTR is now 725 miles (1,167 kilometers) altogether in length.

As a part of the TJTR, the Kanci-Pejagan Toll Road also serves as a link in the much broader Asian Highway 2 (AH2). This international route is part of the Asian Highway Network, which the United Nations initiated in 1959 to more fully connect the road systems among various countries in the world’s largest continent. AH2 originates in the city of Denpasar on the Indonesian island of Bali and continues onto Java (via a bridge between the islands). This highway ultimately extends all the way to the village of Khosravi in Iran. The total length of AH2 is 8,144 miles (13,107 kilometers).
