In the western part of Scotland, a newly built railway station along the waterfront of the town of Gourock was officially opened. This station replaced the one that had been in operation in the immediate vicinity since June 1, 1889. Gourock railway station is a terminus of the Inverclyde Line, which has been in service in that region of Scotland since the 1840s.
One of the key features of the present-day version of Gourock railway station is a covered walkway that connects this structure with a nearby terminal for passenger ferries traveling on the Firth of Clyde (the estuary of the River Clyde). The accompanying photo of a portion of this walkway at Gourock railway station was taken in 2019.
Alex Neil (born in 1951), Scotland’s cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment, presided at the inauguration of the new Gourock railway station. “The Scottish Government is committed to enhancing rail services,” asserted Neil during the ceremony. “This visit today allows me to see at first hand the completion of the enhanced facilities at Gourock and I look forward to it playing a role in boosting the area as a holiday and day trip destination.” Neil also stated, “The new station building and the covered walkway to the ferry terminal will also be more welcoming for passengers.”
