April 14, 2011
In the western region of the Federal Republic of Germany, a newly completed railway station was inaugurated in the city of Koblenz in the state of Rhineland Palatinate. Construction on Koblenz Stadtmitte station had begun in January 2008, and this facility ultimately opened the day before numerous people would be traveling via trains to that city for the start of the Federal Horticultural Show there. The Federal Horticultural Show (The Bundesgartenschau), a major event dating back to 1951, is held every two years in a German city. The six-month show in 2011 was the first one of those events to take place in Rhineland Palatinate, and Koblenz Stadtmitte station proved to be instrumental in transporting attendees to and from that venue.
Those who took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new station were — as pictured from left to right in the above photo — Susanne Kosinsky, regional manager for Deutsche Bahn (the operator of a wide range of train services throughout Germany); Udo Wagner, Deutsche Bahn’s representative for train operations in Rhineland Palitanate and also the neighboring state of Saarland; Joachim Hofmann-Gōttig, lord mayor of Koblenz; and Lothar Kaufmann, department head at the Rhineland Palatinate Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Koblenz Stadtmitte station serves both the West Rhine Railway and the Koblenz-Neuwied railway. Based in the downtown area of Koblenz, the station is located right behind that city’s Lōhr-Center shopping mall. There is a bus station in Lōhr-Center, and this close proximity provides easy access for those train passengers seeking to travel just about anywhere else in Koblenz.
