August 13, 1955
Nearly four months after it first went into service, the Canso Canal Bridge in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia was formally opened. C.D. Howe (1886-1960), who served as Canada’s minster of trade and commerce from 1948 to 1957, presided at the inaugural ceremony for that rotating swing bridge.
This structure crosses the Canso Canal at the eastern end of the rock-filled Canso Causeway and connects the Nova Scotia peninsula with the province’s Cape Breton Island. The Canso Canal Bridge has two lanes for vehicular traffic traveling on Novia Scotia Highway 104 of the Trans-Canada Highway. In addition, this bridge has a single-track line that is operated by the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway. The total length of the Canso Canal Bridge is 308 feet (94 meters).
