2024: “Le Début” of a Paris Metro Station Serving an International Airport

June 24, 2024

Operations formally began for a Paris Metro station built at Orly Airport, which is located approximately 8.1 miles (13 kilometers) south of the central area of France’s capital city. This airport is based in Paris’s southern suburbs of Orly and Villeneuve-le-Roi. It is one of two international airports serving Paris. (The other airport with this distinction is Charles de Gaulle Airport.)

Aérport d’Orly station was one of eight rapid transit stations inaugurated on the same date as an extension of Line 14 of the Paris Metro. The opening of these stations took place just in time for the Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics being hosted that year by Paris. Aérport d’Orly station is the southern terminus of Line 14. This station is also the southern terminus of the Paris Metro in its entirety.

Aérport d’Orly station is distinguished as well by the art on display there. This art includes a large azulejos (tilework) mosaic that was created by Vhils (born in 1987) and has been installed in the station’s concourse. His work there depicts such iconic French landmarks as the Palace of Versailles and the Eiffel Tower. In addition, murals created by Edmond Baudoin (born in 1942) can be found on the platforms at Aérport d’Orly station.

This station was designed by architects Bernard Baret (born in 1953) and François Tamisier (born sometime around 1956). The accompanying photo of the station was taken on its opening day.
